WORLD LUPUS DAY 2012

The ninth annual World Lupus Day, Thursday, May 10, 2012, is a united awareness campaign by lupus organizations around the globe.

Five million or more people in the world have lupus. It is a chronic autoimmune disease which often attacks young women of childbearing age, but individuals of any age or gender can develop lupus. The ongoing and complex nature of lupus causes a wide range of symptoms and effects with repercussions on family, friends, and work colleagues as well. Despite these facts, lupus remains a relatively invisible health issue to the public, health professionals, and governments world-wide, thus continuing the need for increased lupus awareness.

World Lupus Day focuses on the need for heightened public awareness, improved patient healthcare services, increased research into the causes of and a cure for lupus, enhanced physician diagnosis and treatment of lupus, and better epidemiological data on lupus globally.

Please join us in our efforts to accomplish these goals. We invite you to visit www.worldlupusday.org and read further on this website to learn how you can become involved.

RESEARCH REQUEST

Dr. Lily Lim, MD, MRCPCH, PhD(c), Lupus Fellow, Division of Rheumatology, at SickKids, Toronto, has recently made a request to Lupus SK to help locate former patients to assist in a study on the long-term outcomes of patients with childhood-onset SLE. Dr. Lim and her collaborators on this project, Dr. Earl Silverman and Dr. Dafna Gladman, who are both experts on SLE, believe this study will advance the understanding of outcomes of patients who had childhood-onset disease. If you are one of the patients Dr. Lim is looking for and are interested in being involved in this important project, please e-mail: lily.lim@sickkids.ca.

LUPUS RESEARCH

Lupus SK regularly contributes to various Lupus Research programs as part of our efforts to fulfill our Mission Statement. Dr. Alan Rosenberg recently accepted our $2,500.00 donation, at the Lupus SK Fall Symposium, October 1, 2011, on behalf of the University of Saskatchewan Pediatric Rheumatic Disease Research Laboratory. This research offers exciting hope for the future because not only does it pertain to pediatric lupus patients, but in exploring how lupus first develops, a greater understanding of what causes lupus may be uncovered. An article outlining this research is available here on our new research page.

LUPUS SYMPOSIUM PRESENTATION SUMMARIES

Past symposium presentation summaries are now available on our website. The first two summaries are from the Lupus SK Spring Symposium, April 16, 2011. Watch for more to be added in the future.

Alice Germann, Public Education Coordinator for the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, discussed "Heads Up for Healthier Brains". This presentation was designed to encourage all people to take care of their brains, strive to achieve optimal brain function and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, but the strategies are also helpful in reducing and managing the cognitive difficulties which can occur in lupus.

Dr. Natalie Shiff, a pediatric rheumatologist in Saskatoon, spoke about "Pain and Stress Management: Day-to-Day Living with Lupus". It is a comprehensive review of the many challenges people with lupus face and offers constructive ways to adapt and live well with lupus. This summary will be available only until the end of March 2012.

Thank you to Alice Germann and Dr. Natalie Shiff for allowing Lupus SK permission to post their information.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Lupus SK is proud to say that we are an almost entirely volunteer-run organization. That means a large portion of the funds raised go towards the goals in our mission statement, to provide support for those affected by lupus through understanding, education, public awareness and research. A small amount only, is used for administration. That also means that our volunteers are indispensable! Lupus SK would not exist without volunteers. That is why we need you to please consider joining our team as a volunteer.

New volunteers are always welcome and there are many ways to become involved. Let us know what your talents and interests are and we will find just the right spot for you. We have a lot of fun, we feel connected and the accomplishments are very worthwhile.
